Howard & Davis "Regulator #3"
Howard & Davis clocks are sized similar to the well documented E. Howard clocks. And this one looks to be the third model of five. Height 38 1/2", circa 1848.
Solid walnut case in a banjo shape, round head with narrow throat and square bottom. Door wood around the dial is more decorative than most. Throat and lower door glasses are reverse painted, black with gold leaf accents. Brass pendulum and gold wood stick are visible in openings. Painted metal dial is signed "Howard & Davis, Boston".
8-day time only movement. Cast weight is marked "3". Tin weight guard is painted black. Simple sprung metal catches hold the doors closed.
Several experts at the NAWCC national show said this model was not known to exist. And one serious collector / dealer spent a lot of time looking it over and taking pictures for reference. Regardless of rarity this is an outstanding example.
